What is changing in the selectivity?
University entrance exams in Spain for foreign students are evolving. Starting in the 2026-2027 academic year (May or June), a new compulsory selectivity will be implemented for non-EU students or students from countries without an agreement with Spain. This change seeks to standardize the process and adapt it to the current needs of the educational system.
At STUDIES BARCELONA, we are committed to keep you informed about the progress of this new system, while the Ministry of Universities and the Autonomous Communities work on the Royal Decree that will govern these tests.
Take the new selectividad from your country or in Spain
Foreign students will be able to choose between two main options to take the new selectividad:
- From your country: In centers of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) or Spanish embassies.
- In Spain: We recommend traveling to the country and taking an exam at a university in Barcelona, where you can also familiarize yourself with the academic and cultural environment.
At STUDIES BARCELONA, we will provide you with all the updated information so that you can study a Bachelor’s Degree in Barcelona, either in a public or private university. We will also guide you through the available options, including the possibility of taking the online selectividad from your country.

Main changes in the access system
- Language of the tests: To facilitate the access of international students, there will be options in English, in addition to Spanish and co-official languages such as Catalan.
- Cultural adaptation: Content will be made more inclusive and neutral to ensure understanding by students from different backgrounds.
- Personalized weighting: Some subjects will be assessed differently for students from educational systems outside the European Union.
Key tips to prepare for the new Selectividad
- Choose where you will take the test: Decide whether you prefer to prepare from your home country or move to Barcelona for an immersive experience.
- Improve your language level: If you will be taking the Spanish or Catalan tests, strengthen your language skills to maximize your chances of success.
- Consultation with experts: At STUDIES BARCELONA, we will help you to know the dates, requirements and specific procedures of your target university.
The new selectivity for foreigners represents a significant change, but also an opportunity for more students to access the Spanish university system. Stay informed and prepared to make the most of this new academic stage.
